  • J.R. Fuqua, age 95, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

    He was born July 14, 1919 in Seiling, Oklahoma to Frank Fuqua and Alma (Reynolds) Fuqua. He grew up and attended schools in Seiling, Oklahoma. On February 6, 1938 he married Polly Van Sickle in El Reno, Oklahoma.

    On December 9, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in World War II as a heavy equipment operator until he was honorably discharged on October 16, 1945. After moving to Chautauqua County he and Polly owned and operated a gas station in Cedar Vale for a number of years. They later moved to Rural Osage County, Oklahoma where he farmed and ranched. They then moved to Sedan where they have spent the last 28 years.

    J.R. was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sedan; was a longtime member of the Sedan Country Club; The Vesper Masonic Lodge in Sedan; he also enjoyed fishing and working.

    He is survived by his wife of nearly 77 years, Polly Fuqua of Sedan, Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters and his parents.

    Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
