  • Joab (Joe) Haskell Massey

    Joe H. Massey, age 82, of Cedar Vale, Kansas passed away on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

    He was born on July 5, 1938 in Winfield, Kansas to Lyle W. Massey and Thelma (Houser) Massey-Defore.  He graduated from Dexter High School.  After high school Joe enlisted in the National Guard and served for several years.

    On April 18, 1958 he married Judith “Judi” Marie Marker in Dexter, Kansas.  They lived near Cedar Vale their entire married life.

    Joe worked for the railroad for seven years, as well as hauled mobil gas, he also worked as a cattle rancher and farmer for over 60 years.  Judi preceded him in death on July 17, 2000.

    He was a past member of the USD #285 School Board in Cedar Vale, was a past member of Lion’s Club and the Coop Exchange; he enjoyed hunting, dancing, working, playing horseshoes, and cards, he also enjoyed collecting all kinds of artifacts.

    He is survived by three daughters; Beth Wolfe and husband Leonard of Frankfort, Kansas, Sherri Edmundson and husband Stacey of Marysville, Kansas, and Vivian Shaw and husband Rodney of Sedan, Kansas; one son, Todd Massey and wife Peggy of Cedar Vale, Kansas; four brothers, Bob Massey of Dexter, Kansas, Jack Massey of Dexter, Kansas, Lyle Massey of Winfield, Kansas and Dan Defore of Winfield, Kansas; one sister, Debbie Bauer of Wichita, Kansas; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his wife Judi; one brother, and two sisters.

    Private Family Graveside Services will be held at a later date.  The pallbearers are Ryan Edmundson, Nick Wolfe, Colton Massey, Parker Massey and Garrett Green.

    Friends may sign the register book on Thursday, April 29, 2021 from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Dickens Family Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.  The casket will be closed.

    The family has suggested memorials to the Hewins Park in Cedar Vale and those may be left in care of the Dickens Family Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.

    Can't believe so many of our card-playing buddies are gone - Joe and Judi were always so much fun and we enjoyed being their friends. Sympathies to the family from Ronnie and I!


    Sorry for your loss. He was a kind and generous man and will be greatly missed.


    So sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I always enjoyed visiting with him and joking about Lyle (bless his heart). Will miss seeing him around town. You all.are in my thoughts and prayers.
