  • Sedan – Dorothy Irene Garrett, age 91, of Brookfield, Missouri (formerly of Sedan and Caney) passed away Sunday, February 23, 2020 at McLarney Manor in Brookfield, Missouri.

    Dorothy Irene Carpenter was born September 11, 1928, southeast of Sedan, Kansas to Roy Benjamin and Edith (Ford) Carpenter.  She attended High Rock rural school, walking a mile through pasture to get there.  In September 1941, the family moved to Parsons, Kansas so Roy could get a job building the munitions plant.  Dorothy finished the 8th grade at MKT rural school in Labette County.  They moved back to Sedan in the summer of 1942.  She graduated from Sedan High School in 1946.  After graduating she attended KU for one year in the school of Engineering and Architecture.  Needing to earn money before she went back to school, she took a job at the First National Bank in Sedan.

    On August 28, 1948 she married Bert Lee Garrett.  They became parents of Sandra, Peggy, and Judy. 

    Dot was a member of the First Baptist Church of Caney and was active in the church, 4-H, Sigourneyan Club, Beta Sigma Phi, Garden Club, and other community services.  Bert passed away on April 9, 2004 and Judy passed away on January 11, 2011.  Dot then moved to Brookfield, Missouri.

    Dorothy is survived by two daughters; Sandra Shierling and husband Val of Arlington, Texas and Peggy Crist and husband Michael of Brookfield, Missouri; one brother, Jack Carpenter and wife Kay of Peru, Kansas and one sister-in-law, Naida Carpenter of Sedan, Kansas  and one son-in-law, Bruce Theissen of Mustang, Oklahoma; 8 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, and many other family and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her daughter, husband, one brother, Harold Carpenter, two sisters, Geraldine Wilson and Maxine Brim, one granddaughter, Jennifer Schierling and her parents.

    Graveside services will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan with Pastor Todd Theissen of the Summit Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma officiating.

    Family and friends may call on Saturday, February 29, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Dickens Family Funeral Home in Sedan. 

    The family has suggested memorials to the McLarney Manor Activities Fund and may be left in care of the Dickens Family Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas  67361.




    Dorothy was a very nice lady.


    Sandy and Peggy, I am so sorry to hear about your mom. She was always so sweet. Can you just imagine the reunion of old friends! She was pretty much the last one. I can just see them all in Hazel’s back room! Lots of good times! I will keep you in my prayers. Mickey (Warren) Fisher.
