  • Sedan – Millie J. Spire, age 90, of rural Chautauqua, Kansas passed away Thursday, October 25, 2018 at her home.

    Millie was born on December 20, 1927 in Copan, Oklahoma to Charles Henry Sumner and Pearl (Percell) Sumner.  She grew up in Copan and graduated from Copan High School.

    On July 29, 1944 she married Sylvester Spire in Sedan, Kansas.  They lived a short time here before moving to Texas where they lived for several years before returning to Chautauqua in 1986.  She was preceded in death by her husband on January 26, 2011.

    Millie was a homemaker for many years but was involved in so many activities.  She was a member of the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, she was very involved with everything in the Church; she was a past director of the nursery at Thomas Avenue Baptist Church, was involved with the Candy Stripers at Bayshore Community Hospital, and was instrumental in the Christmas store at Pleasant Valley Manor for numerous years. 

    Millie is survived by two sons; Dewayne Spire and wife Hazel of Chautauqua, Kansas and Dennis and wife Brenda of San Marcos, Texas; one daughter, Ellen Rushing of rural Chautauqua, Kansas; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; two foster great-grandchildren; numerous other family and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her husband Sylvester “Sparky” Spire, her parents, four brothers, and two sisters.

    Church Services will be held Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua with Pastor Larrie Adams officiating.  Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua, Kansas.

    Family and friends may call on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Dickens Family Funeral Home in Sedan.

    The family has suggested memorials to the New Life Baptist Church and those remembrances may be left in care of the Dickens Family Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
