  • Sedan – Harold Wright Morton, age 95, passed away March 18, 2018 at Brookside Manor, in Overbrook, Kansas.

    Harold was born March 4, 1923 to Arthur L. and Bonney (Weaver) Morton on the family farm near Fall River, Kansas. He attended school in Severy, Kansas graduating in 1941. He also attended Emporia State University and while in the army Dayton College in Ohio.

    Harold served his country in the US Army beginning February 25, 1943. He was involved in the European Theater being wounded by shrapnel, recovering in a hospital in England.  Returning to his unit he served during the occupation and witnessed the horrible conditions of the concentration camps and deplorable working conditions of the forced laborers.  He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and received the WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars and Purple Heart. He received his honorable discharge on January 23, 1946.

    Soon after the war he made his residence in Sedan, opening a John Deere dealership with his brother Ed Morton.

    He was united in marriage to Dorothy Belle Hanes, August 27, 1950. They made Sedan their home for the next 67 years.  Their daughter Nancy was born in 1952.

    Harold was a past president of the Sedan Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club, and a member of the American Legion and VFW for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Sedan United Methodist Church and Sedan Area Economic Development Corporation.

    They sold the dealership in 1982 and he and Dorothy enjoyed many years of retirement travelling in their motor home, enjoying their Good Sam’s Camping club and many trips to Branson. Missouri.

    Harold was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert, a sister Margaret Peterson, and hisGrandson, Grant Durbin. He is survived by his daughter Nancy Durbin, her husband Randal, his brother Ed Morton, and grandson Nathan Durbin and three precious great granddaughters Hayley, Morgan and Carley Durbin.

    Memorial Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 13, 2018 in Greenwood Cemetery, Sedan, Kansas with Hospice Chaplain Keith Springer officiating.

    Prayers of love for the family,we never called them by their names was always Mr.Morton, no matter which one we was speaking to,God bless each of you.
